THE WHAT Estée Lauder Companies has reported a record Q2 fiscal 2022, with sales up 14 percent, bolstered by a market recovery in Western markets and strong online sales. 

THE DETAILS Reporting US$4.85 billion in sales, ELC saw earnings of US$1.09 billion, up from US$870 million YOY. 

Skincare sales rose 12 percent YOY during the quarter to US$3.2billion, with La Mer and Clinique reporting double digit growth. 

Make-up sales hit US$1.4 billion, up 11 percent, however, failed to reach pre-pandemic levels. Estée Lauder, MAC, Too Faced, Tom Ford Beauty, Smashbox, Estée Lauder’s Double Wear and Futurist foundation were all reported to have done well.

Achieving 29 percent growth, fragrance sales hit US$799 million, driven by Jo Malone, Tom Ford and Kilian Paris. Hair sales increased 17 percent to US$180 million. 

Looking at regional growth, the Americas saw a 24 percent YOY increase to US$1.3 billion in sales, while Europe, the Middle East and Africa rose 15 percent to US$2.3 billion. 

Asia Pacific was driven by China, reporting a 7 percent rise to US$1.9 billion. 

THE WHY ELC President and CEO Fabrizio Freda said, “We achieved record sales and profitability in the second quarter of fiscal 2022, empowered by the timeless desirability of our brands and despite accelerated volatility and variability, as well as supply chain challenges, from the pandemic.

“Every category, region and major channel expanded, showcasing the strength of our multiple engines of growth strategy. We seized the favorable dynamics of skin care, fragrances, developed markets in the West and brick-and-mortar, and continued to prosper in the East with Chinese consumers, as well as in global travel retail and global online.”
