THE WHAT? L’Oréal has reported a record-breaking year in 2021, with sales growth up 16 percent on a like-for-like basis to €32.2 billion.
THE DETAILS The historic year was driven by an ‘infinite appetite for beauty’ according to Chief Executive Nicolas Hieronimus in an interview with the Financial Times.
Net profit after controlling interest hit €4.59 billion, up 29 percent YOY. Looking at sectors, Latin America saw the biggest growth, up 20.6 per cent, followed by North Asia, North America, Europe and South Asia Pacific, Middle East and North America (SAPMENA) at 18.6, 18.1, 10.7 and 10 percent respectively.
L’Oréal also reported a successful Q4, with global sales of €9.09 billion, up 15.4 YOY. Active Cosmetics saw the biggest growth, up 28.4 percent, while Professional Products was up 18.5 percent, followed by L’Oréal Luxe and Consumer products at 16.5 and 10 percent respectively.
L’Oréal Luxe became the company’s largest division in 2021, with ‘remarkable success’ in fragrances, with Active Cosmetics doubling in the past four years. The company’s e-commerce channel grew by 25.7 percent, accounting for 28.9 percent.
The cosmetics giant increased its advertising and promotion expenses during 2021 by 190 basis points, at 32.8 percent of sales.
THE WHY? According to Hieronimus, “2021 was a historic year for L’Oréal. Thanks to the expertise, passion and commitment of our 85,400 L’Oréalians around the world, the Group achieved record growth of +16.1%1, twice that of the worldwide beauty market. L’Oréal gained market share in all Zones, Divisions and categories. Over two years, the Group achieved growth of +11.3% like-for-like, spectacularly outperforming a market that had returned almost to 2019 levels.”
