Aesthetic injectable companies. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issues recall of Family Dollar products following rodent infestation

THE WHAT? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a voluntary recall of products sold by the Family Dollar store, due to a potential contamination from to a rodent infestation. 

THE DETAILS The recall applies across six states – Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee – from 1 January, 2021. 

The select products came from the retailer’s distribution facility in West Memphis Arkansas, where the FDA found insanitary conditions, including a rodent infestation that could cause many of the products to become contaminated. 

Some items included cosmetics – skincare products, baby oils, lipsticks, shampoos, baby wipes – feminine hygiene products and OTC medications.

Consumers are advised not to use the impacted products and that they be discarded. 

THE WHY? The FDA began an investigation of the Family Dollar distribution facility in West Memphis, Arkansas, in January 2022 following a consumer complaint. 

According to the FDA, “Conditions observed during the inspection included live rodents, dead rodents in various states of decay, rodent faeces and urine, evidence of gnawing, nesting and rodent odors throughout the facility, dead birds and bird droppings, and products stored in conditions that did not protect against contamination.”

More than 1,100 dead rodents were recovered from the facility following a fumigation at the facility in January 2022.
