Aesthetic injectable companies. Coty starts production of first scents made with carbon-captured ethanol

Biorevitalization

THE WHAT? Coty has announced that it has started production of what it claims is the world’s first globally distributed fragrances made using carbon captured ethanol.

THE DETAILS Production began in mid-January from the US beauty behemoth’s Granollers facility in Spain and finished products will hit shelves in the coming months.

The fragrances are made using CarbonSmart ethanol produced by LanzaTech as part of a partnership deal between the two companies announced in March last year.

“Coty’s accelerated release of fragrances made using carbon-captured ethanol represents the ground-breaking sustainability progress that I joined Coty to lead,” said Dr. Shimei Fan, Chief Scientific Officer at Coty. “This exciting step forward in Coty’s sustainability journey demonstrates our ability to meet and exceed the ambitious clean and green roadmaps we have set for the future. We are now on course to integrate carbon-captured ethanol into a majority of our fragrance portfolio ahead of our ambitious 2023 goal, putting Coty on the leading edge of sustainable fragrance innovation. I look forward to many further accomplishments to come, as we continue to deliver on our Beauty That Lasts sustainability strategy.”

THE WHY? Ethanol is Coty’s top fragrance ingredient by volume and therefore using carbon captured ethanol will reduce the Max Factor-owner’s environmental impact significantly. Carbon captured ethanol involved nearly a zero water consumption and reduced the need for agricultural land, in turn limited the impact on biodiversity and carbon emissions related to fragrance production.
